One of the perks of going to college or university (as well as the education, forging a career, meeting new people) is getting discounts using your Student ID on almost everything. Once you graduate, this is no longer an option...or is it?
A popular way of ensuring you qualify for student discounts is to apply for a NUS extra card (https://www.nus.org.uk/en/nus-extra/). Although it doesn't mean you get the same discounts as you did when you were a university student, there are still a lot of discounts to be had. You can apply to do a cheap online course through Groupon or Wowcher (the first time I did this, I bought an accounting course from E-Careers at £9 through Wowcher). Another way is to enrol on a free course from sites like Shaw Academy or OfCourse, which will still make you eligible for a NUS extra card.
The card itself costs £12 a year plus p+p, but you can easily make this back. Examples of NUS extra offers advertised include:

- 10% off Superdrug, although at the moment they are running 20% discount
- 40% off Pizza Express (and Zizzi for the time being)
- 25% off Prezzo
- 20% off Pizza Hut restaurants
- 10% off New Look, Oasis, Miss Selfridges, Toyshop
- 10% off Zavvi
- 20% off Vision Express
- 10% off Maplin
- Discounts on MacBooks and iPads from Apple website
- 10% off Co-op Food
- Prime Student Membership - 6 month free trial, half price off a normal Prime Membership after
- 25% off Transpennine Express when bought through the NUS website
There are also other offers to be had when you ask around:
- Student prices for cinema tickets and museums
- Order a McDonalds meal, get a free Mcflurry or Cheeseburger
- Lots of stores do discounts, for example, Paperchase do 10%
- Ask your local shops, our local Chinese supermarket took 10% off our shopping
Whilst some people might criticise getting a NUS extra card if you are not a genuine student, I would say that it makes sense money wise. It is hard to save money and this provides a way of helping to save more. Also, the course that you apply for to qualify for the card might be something you are interested in, so another bonus too!
